How to use this list
Initially, I divided this list up by age and category but it quickly became clear that so many of the apps spanned broad age ranges and crossed between subjects so I chose to code them instead. Use the following legend to help you find what you're looking for.
A, iOS, W - indicates on which platform the app/game is available.
A - Android, iOS -iPhone/iPad (note that some may not be available for both; please check the app store), W - web
P, EE, LE, M - indicates which age group the app/game is suitable for. This is a rough guide only, as children will all be at different developmental stages. Please read the app description as well to guage if it is likely right for your child.
P - preschool and kindergarten, EE - early elementary (gr. 1-3), LE - late elementary (gr. 4-5), M - middle years (gr. 6 - 8)
$ - Indicates a paid app. If I've recommended it here, it means I think it is worth the money. My children or my classes have all tested these apps/games and love them!
FI - Indicates that the app is available in French and is suitable for French Immersion students. Some apps may also be available in other languages; if that's the case, I've mentioned it in the comments.
Happy learning!

Starfall - this great early reading app and website teaches children many of the fundamental skills necessary to become a strong reader. A, iOS, W, P

ABC-Ya! - fun games that allow kids to practice early reading, math and "preschool skills" (colours, patterns, shapes, etc). Multiple app options available. Also available for kids through to Gr. 5. A, iOS, W, P

Super Why! - based on the PBS/CBC TV show of the same name, this app helps preschoolers build early reading skills through fun games. Multiple app options available. A, iOS, W, P

Leo's Pad - A fun, game & story-based learning app that includes reading and STEM learning. Offered as a series of chapters, this app goes beyond simply ABCs and 123s. iOS, P, $

ThinkRolls - My kids cannot get enough of this app! A series of mazes with different puzzles to solve to get to the end, this app develops critical thinking, problem-solving and resiliency without the use of language or instructions. Well-scaffolded and deceptively simple, this app will keep your kids learning without knowing it. A, iOS, Amazon P, EE, LE, $ (although free versions are sometimes available)

DragonBox Numbers & Big Numbers - Part of the truly fantastic DragonBox series of apps, this app teaches early numeracy skills in a very different way. Children are encouraged to build numbers using cute little characters called Nooms, who grow, shrink and combine to make different sizes and quantities. Super fun, super intuitive and not at all the way you learned math! A, iOS, Amazon & Microsoft too! $, P, EE, LE

DragonBox Algebra 5+ and 12+ - Focusing on learning algebra intuitively and in a game environment, these apps lives up to the DragonBox family reputation. Your child will discover the basics (and more!) of algebra without focusing on numbers and mathematical proofs. A, iOS (even Microsoft & Amazon!), EE, LE, M, $

Epic! Unlimited library - This is an ebook subscription service for kids with high quality renditions of many great picture books, non-fiction picture books, novels and magazines. Access is free for teachers and their classes and is relatively inexpensive for families (especially given the sheer number of books and customizability). Unfortunately no French books yet. A, iOS, Kindle, W, P, EE, LE, M, $

BitsBoard - this is a neat app because it not only let's you use your own material to build games, it also allows you to share what you've created and use the creations of others. Need your kidss to have an engaging way to practice their sight words? You can do that here. Need them to practice their math facts to fluency? Easily done as well. In fact, someone else has probably already done it for you. All you need to do is look for it. iOS, P, EE, LE, M, $ (free for teachers), FI

Chocolapps - A series of quality apps spanning the gamut from reading to math to science to colouring. The books provide excellent multi-lingual reading practice for young children. I love that it is easy to adapt the books in so many ways - language (6+ languages available within each book), reading rate, word tracking, and more! The images are all high quality, the pace of the language is appropriate for second language learners and the fact that many of the stories are well-known fairy tales is also great for learning to read in a second language. The memo-rebus app is great for beginning readers and the Calculo kids app supports kids in learning math in different ways and different languages. All in all, these apps are great! iOS, P, EE, $, FI

Jeux Pour Lire avec Sami et Julie - this one serves the French Immersion crowd specifically but in a sea of pretty terrible French learning apps for kids, this one stands out. Although the language goes too quickly for second-language learners, kids figure out the object of each game fairly quickly and are able to listen for key words and sounds that allow them to complete the tasks and build skills such as phonological awareness & phonics. iOS, P, EE, $, FI

Book Creator - if you have a budding author on your hands, this app is wonderful! Kids can easily create and publish beautiful books to share with family and friends. A must have for any classroom. iOS, A, Windows, EE, LE, M, In App purchases, FI

Hopscotch - If your child is interested in coding, this is a great place to start. Simple & intuitive, Hopscotch teaches coding through a gaming environment that will have your child coding in no time! iOS, LE, M

Goldiblox: Adventures in Coding - Although I wasn't in love with their first app, around our house we are in love with the toys and this app. Adventures in Coding provides the storyline and game-based atmosphere that Goldiblox was based on in the first place. Definitely fun for girls (and boys) who love a story tied to their STEAM adventures.iOs, P, E, LE, $
