Welcome to The Lit Pit!
The Lit Pit grew out of a conversation that started with "Wouldn't it be amazing if...". Wouldn't it be amazing if we could take the time we had for learning assistance and literacy support and do something really innovative and effective? Wouldn't it be amazing if we could introduce teachers and students to a great structure for teaching and practicing literacy skills? Wouldn't it be great if we could reach at-risk kids effectively? Wouldn't it be great if we could make it all fun for teachers and kids?
Lucky enough to have an empty classroom, we began to envision, and later build, a space where classroom teachers could bring their classes to co-teach with one of us. Loosely based on the structure of The Daily 5, the room takes a station-based approach to reading and writing. Planning is done collaboratively with the classroom teacher and looks closely at the needs of the individual students in the classroom, the curriculum and the goals of the teacher for that term. We take on most of the Lit Pit set-up and preparation from that point on, ensuring ease of use for everyone who uses the space.
Two teachers, 1(or more) educational assistants, 6 stations, all focused on learning and practicing reading and writing equals a powerful and exciting teaching model!
